Did Christina Aguilera Screw Up The National Anthem Superbowl XLV

ESPN’s Amy Nelson tweeted, “Did xtina just mess up the lyrics? Or was I imagining it?”

Joe Psonanski of Sports Illustrated asked, “Blowing the words of the anthem at the Super Bowl. Wow. Do they take away one of her five Grammys for that? Two?”

CNBC’s Darren Rovell was concerned with the betting implications, noting “Christina Aguilera just killed the National Anthem bet by singing the wrong words. Easily would have gone over 2 minutes.”

At about 51 seconds in, as she was about to sing the fourth line (“O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming”), she accidentally sang a hybrid of the second line: “What so proudly we watched, at the twilight’s last streaming.”

What do you think? Did she goof up the national anthem? Post your thoughts below:

yeah, she did, but i’d still go out with her.

She absolutely did. Come on. Really? She repeated the lyrics just before “the rocket’s red glare” part. Not good at all. It’s a shame.

She completely messed it up..
She said ” what so proudly we watched” and it should of been “O’er the ramparts we watched”
And her voice didn’t sound all that great either!! It’s one thing to make a mistake performing ( i have been in performing groups and it happens all the time) but to mess up the Star Spangled Banner is horrible!! Thats something a singer knows from heart.

she was supposed to say “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?” she said “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last (reaming?)”

Of course she did. She is more concerned about herself than getting our national anthem right. Just another reason not to respect her

I thought it was my imagination but my wife picked up on it too. See what happens when you take the Pledge of Allegiance out of the schools. Our kids don’t know the words anymore. What a disgrace!

what the hell does the pledge of alliegance have to do with the national anthem?

I don’t care if she did or not. She was good. Good vocals. And she looked good as heck. Please, it doesn’t really matter… as long as she tried her best. Go Christina!!! WE LOVE YOU FOREVER AND EVER.

simon cowell would totally disagree with that statement.

As a wife of a soldier serving our country in Afghanistan right now I COMPLETELY disagree with this statement – and so should you!!

Jack February 7, 2011 at 4:11 pm

NO. This is a free country. As someone who supports someone fighting for our freedoms should know that we are fighting to have our own opinions. NO. We reject this narrow notion that I ‘should’ have to believe one way or another.

Christiana was very good. She made one mistake. That’s all. It was her best.. and he nailed the song. It was awesome. I tend to like her version a little better. Plus she kept on going despite her mistake like any good performer. BOOO YOU!

We love Christina Aguilera forever and ever. We love you girl. you did not mess up the national anthem. You did not goof up the national anthem. You did your best and that is what matters. We love you… forever and ever!

simon cowell would totally disagree with that statement. i’m not even kidding. he really would. you have to be accurate on the national anthem. it’s like our country.

Did this person really say she didn’t mess up the NATIONAL anthem?? It doesn’t take a hater or a liker to know that, YES, she did!

Reply

bill February 6, 2011 at 8:32 pm

yes she did and for you to sit there and say she didn’t you should be ashamed come one the song this country was built on the song that defines every sporting event in your life with the people who defend you so you can afford to be a diva instead of in a burlap sack with holes only for you to see and you messed it up shame on you christina and shame on anyone who supports that. i bet you she wouldn’t mess up her own lyrics at a concert so why fuck up the national anthem

You guys are all haters!

Christinal Aguilera did not mess up the national anthem.

Who did?

I thought it was awful that the stadium was closed… because of the snow they could not see or hear the airforce flying above. I thought that was as big as a goof as all the others. Please! Don’t hate C.A.

Jaxon February 6, 2011 at 7:13 pm

Around the .50 second mark of the video, Aguilera was supposed to sing “O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.”

But instead, she mouthed off: “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last streaming.”

Yes, she made up the words. The second line of the tune reads: “What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.” Sounds like she combined the second and fourth lines of the Francis

That was a total fail. Can she even call herself an American after that?! Come on Christina. you’ve got to try harder than that.

Bring back Whitney Houston!!!!!!

clarajune February 6, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Not only did she screw up the words but she sounded awful!! Yuck! Why can’t they just sing the song the way it was taught to us instead of adding all that fancy yoddling with it. It’s beautiful in its simplicity!

Reply

Jamie February 7, 2011 at 3:03 pm

Oh come on!!! She made a simple mistake! It really isn’t that big of a deal and everyone needs to stop freaking out about it. You would do the same thing if you were in her position. And she sang the anthem amazingly! She has the most beautiful voice and she did a good job. So just back off!

Christina Aguilera Fail February 6, 2011 at 7:39 pm

Yes it was a huge FAIL. I still cannot believe it. That girl that went before her was very gross too. Awful. Where did they get these singers? FAIL both girls.

Christina majorly botched the national anthem, leaving out the “O’er the ramparts we watched” line altogether. Watch her struggle with the lyrics below.

For real, OMG, after such a beautiful job with the Declaration, 911 and the “Go Country We’re still OK” message—-and she messes up the words. We all had tears in our eyes prior to “the National Anthem” and she messed it up. Way to Go and Thanks for really ruining it for millions. .

Reply

Jamie February 7, 2011 at 3:04 pm

what really ruined it was big ben botching the whole game.

Christina Aguilera makes a mistake at the superbowl. So what. Hates are always here.

This isn’t a bad mistake. She sang better than the halftime show. Really.

sammy eider February 6, 2011 at 8:47 pm

OMG. I can’t believe people are making a big deal about this. Really. It was a simple mistake. Would you do better? Wouldn’t you be a tad bit nervous singing in front of the world? OMG. Please. Haters are bad.

Christina… we love you forever and ever and ever. Yes we can. Yes we do. Keep up singing. You sang better than that witch Lea Michele. You are my idol… my American Idol. Thanks!

Her only job was to REMEMBER the lyrics. She is an absolute insult to the men and women of our armed forces and our COUNTRY who she was supposed to be representing and singing praise to. Why not choose someone to sing the National Anthem that would actually find it an honor and get the lyrics right; someone who would see it as a true honor and not just another gig like maybe a soldier or veteran? Maybe a children’s choir? Just a suggestion.

No, you weirdo! You witch…

The people that are an insult to the men and women of our armed forces are the people who decided to fly the airplanes over a stadium that was covered because of the snow. No one could hear them, it was a huge mistake.

Didn’t they know no one could see them?

Awful.

The National Anthem is not about the performer! It is about our country. It is not supposed to be vocal that displays the full range of the singers’ vocal capabilities. It is to be sung reverently without added flourishes, etc. All the extras the singers put in this song are an insult to the writer of the words and the tune. When singers started adding “soul,” they triffled with the soul of the song and our with our pride.

I agree….. I love Christinas style and music, but the Anthem is the Anthem. It should let it speak for itself.

For real—not a hater, but come on. She probably got paid 3-4 times what I make in a year for a few minutes. She let alot of people down, the armed forces, their families and the folks watching who look forward to the Super Bowl. It’s an honor to sing the National Anthem At The Super Bowl and apparently she didn’t take it seriously. Most of Americans caught it, we do know the words!

Her dad was in the Army. I bet he is real proud of her now.

SHE WAS AWFUL. i had 14 people at my house to watch the game and everyone jumped up at the same time and screamed “she f-ed that up!!!!” not only did she mess up the words for HER nation’s anthem but she OVERKILLED the vocals. it’s not necessary for you to say ohhhhohohohohohohhhh after every other word you sing. that doesn’t sound good, it just sounds like you’re trying WAYYY too hard. she SUCKS.

Reply

Richard February 6, 2011 at 11:20 pm

You’re totally exaggerating! Its her style to sing like this!

Reply

RP Engle February 7, 2011 at 12:27 am

It’s NOT a style to screw up the words to a song, suggesting as such is pure ignorance. She messed it up pure and simple, suggesting otherwise is also pure ignorance, and it’s inexcusable.
We all know JJ’s whoopsie was intentional, but this was just plain bad.
How does anyone NOT know the words to the National Anthem?

Reply

NDChick February 7, 2011 at 12:34 am

She should have practiced the song more than once and and looked at the telaprompters if she was confused! That is not cool to screw up the National Anthem even my 6 year old noticed it!

Agulera did mess up the national anthem. Yes she did!

Reply

yeehaw February 7, 2011 at 2:56 pm

If she would have spent more time concentrating on the song instead of doing all those Vocal Runs with her voice she might not have messed up. Sometime keeping it somewhat simple at a National event will do you more good than harm obviously. She messed up and she knew she did soon as it happened but she did a pretty good job winging it and trying not to look too much like a donkey. But Still yall it is the National Anthem and that was the Super Bowl you just can’t mess it up

I know everyone agrees that she messes up. Everyone should also remember that she is human. Stars make mistakes too. The striving to be perfect and not being able to be forgiven for mistakes is what makes so many become disfunctional burnouts and turn to drugs and alcohol. Old Youtube videos show Christina doing the Anthem perfectly several times on other occasions, so it is not as if she didnt know the words. Nerves and huge crowds during the superbowl….. I am surprised this kind of thing doesnt happen more often. I feel sorry thant Christina made the mistake, because like most people, she is probably embarrassed and has a huge scar on her performance record. I am sure this has effected her emotionally.
