Heated exchanges, protests, and inflamed rhetoric have surrounded the issue of the potential muslim cultural center and prayer room. Although it isn’t exactly at Ground Zero, and it can’t be defined as a mosque; nevertheless, this real estate transaction is ill-advised and inappropriate.
Some in the news media have argued that this is a New York issue, and that only New Yorkers should weigh in on it. However, this is no more a New York issue than the attack at Pearl Harbor was an Hawaiian Islands issue– which on December 7, 1941 was a U.S. territory and not a state. Like the attack on Pearl Harbor, the attack on the World Trade Center has resulted in the United States being brought into armed conflict–a war against its’ perpetrators, a war that is ongoing and the longest recorded engagement of its’ kind.
But As For Me…
To build this center at this time while we remain at war may be politically correct for some, but it lacks sensitivity and wisdom and pours salt on the open national wound. It minimizes the feelings of the families who lost friends and family at the W.T.C. and for those families whose sacrifice of loved ones continues in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. To even suggest at this time that an Islamic center even remotely near Ground Zero will bridge a cultural divide and promote understanding and tolerance is naive at best and represents a total disconnect with the nation-at-large.
