The August doldrums may ring the death knell for independent candidates or candidates less well known supported by the Tea Party going up against their better known or convention-endorsed two-party counterparts to become the Republican Party or Democratic Party nominee in the general election. Ostensibly, the change was made for those states that did not have a long enough period between the primary and general elections allowing more soldiers serving around the world a chance to vote and have their vote count in the November general election.. However, this change from the traditional month of September to August when most Americans are spending the last days of summer on vacation may lower the turnout for primaries that historically have been low in non-presidential election years and definitely will impact the choices that the voters have in November’s general election.
But As For Me…
The move to earlier primaries may prove to be more than extending the time for our soldiers to vote in the general election by absentee ballot. It may support the idea that independent movements such as the Tea Party cannot work within the established party structure; that such a change to summer primaries will support the convention endorsed candidate or well known candidate over candidates new to the political process, thus stifling change or, at the least, an injection of new blood. If the intent was to allow greater participation in the election process for our gals and guys overseas, why not move the primaries to an earlier date such as May or June or early September for all states? Otherwise, the Tea Party Movement or any sizable independent movement must organize itself into a viable third party to insure being on the ballot in November.
