Wars have not been about ideology so much as they have been one of economic resources. WWI was fanned by the industrial revolution and the ever growing need for resources to fuel it. And the economic repression of Germany following WWI is often viewed as a major contributing factor to WWII. China’s economic revolution could spell a race for energy resources with another behemoth of energy consumption: the United States. In the last few years, China has been slowly developing economic ties with developing nations and acquiring favorable trade agreements involving natural resources, even in the areas that the U.S. considers as part of its’ sphere of influence, namely Latin America.
Knowing that China only plays by the rules when it is in their best interests, the U.S. needs to note this ascendency of China to the top energy consumer with a vigilant and wary eye, lest history repeats itself.
