This country has always relied upon entrepreneurs to drive the economy. Plaguing this nation has been a move in recent years from manufacturing to a consumer economy. NAFTA was meant to keep higher paying jobs in the U.S. and export the lower paying jobs to other parts of the world, namely India and China. However, when you move the manufacturing out of the country, management and tech jobs naturally follow. To regain our former position in the global economy and to reassign our role from consumer dependent, it is absolutely vital to encourage and support with tax breaks and subsidies small businesses and our entrepreneurs. President Obama vowed to support a new economic revival, one based on implementing a green economy–an attempt at social entrepreneurship. However, closer scrutiny reveals again an administration based upon words rather than action.
Biodiesel that recycles vegetable oil and animal fats, a substitute for petroleum based diesel, formerly supported by federal subsidies has been allowed to expire resulting in an economic struggle of this fledgling “green” business.
NatCore Technology, a New Jersey solar tech firm, made a deal to manufacture its’ solar panels in China after failing to find interest and support from the U.S. government. For entrepreneur, Chuck Povini, only after his story was reported on ABC, did he get a call from the White House. Again, an inexperienced Obama Administration has failed to put into practice the rhetoric it spouts. As Phyllis Cuttino, director of the Pew Environment Group Climate and Energy Program in Washington, so aptly put it, the U.S. is missing the boat in clean energy, because unlike other nations like China, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany and Spain, the U.S. relies upon a holdge podge of state policies, but lacks a national clean energy policy.
But As For Me…
Entrepreneurs must by nature be risk takers. However, under an Obama Administration, risk has become a four letter word! Instead we are left with an economy whose recovery is stalled because of an Administration more concerned with ”too big to fail” companies, rather than supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses. This lack of experience and leadership is giving birth to a national policy whereby companies are “too small to succeed.”
