Hey, Mr. President! Here’s Just One Suggestion On Reforming Health Care…

It is apparent to many news observers that Americans see the necessity of reforming our current health care system, but are reticent about adopting another enormous entitlement program at this economic vicissitude. Perhaps townhall meetings would have produced more than anger if instead of making the meetings an opportunity for photo ops, sound bites, and a sales pitch, you would have been better served to have sought suggestions for improvement and cost-cutting measures from those who are insured.
For instance, one quick fix would allow those currently insured to access the nearest medical facility even outside of their current provider’s network. At present, insurance companies only allow you to seek care at a provider contracted with your insurance company to provide services. If that provider is not located near you, then the only option, as suggested by the insurance provider, is to seek Urgent Care or go to the ER at a local hospital. The cost differential from seeking routine tests, or medical care from a family practicioner/clinic as opposed to the services of an ER or Urgent Care are substantially lower.
This is just one suggestion to reform the system that could save megabucks.
But As For Me…
Mr. President, many years ago the Japanese utilized Dr. Edward Demings 14 points to improve quality, motivate, reform, and revive private industry. A tenet of that plan was to hold brainstorming sessions to improve the system including both workers and management. Novel idea, huh? And it works! How about opening up your dot gov sites and getting real suggestions from real people of what they want to keep and what they want to change about their present insurance coverage , using as a model the Health & Human Services National Blog on Pandemic Influenza initiated by Secretary Leavitt in 2007, rather than the paid lobbyists, the technocrats, and the talking heads.
Mr. President, with all due respect, go with a proven management strategy rather than the bully pulpit with a sermon/message that changes week-to-week! Change what you know before venturing into the unknown–Now that’s Real Change, and one we can all support!
