On Friday, November 7, 2008 during The Oprah Winfrey Show , her panel discussion lay claim to this election year as the demarcation year that will mark the period to come as “Before Barack” and “After Barack.”
Flashback: Spike Lee was the first to propose this new way of dividing up the seperate eras on MSNBC,
Further, they continued their worshipful praise by quoting from the latest Times Magazine, November 17,2008, How Obama Rewrote The Book, by Nancy Gibbs, (an issue solely dedicated to Barack Obama):
“Some princes are born in palaces. Some are born in mangers. But a few are born in the imagination, out of scraps of history and hope. “
Add to this the staging of the first news conference by Barack Obama with its’ symbolic flagstaffs in the background reminiscent of the backdrop for his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, and the introduction of new signage on the front of the podium announcing ” The Office of the President Elect,” and we need to pause and consider where such misguided public veneration and flagrant panoply will lead this nation.
Despite this symbolic pageantry, it was quite clear that there was little “new news” at his first news conference. Obama was still in his campaign mode offering more rhetoric, little substance, but a continued downplay on fulfilling campaign promises. Extending unemployment benefits to meet the needs of 1.2 million who have lost their jobs this year is a given, nothing new there.
What would have helped the uncertainty of the current state of Wall Street that continues in a downward spiral would have been the naming of the Secretary of the Treasury. Obama sidestepping the announcement of who is to fill this position, said at the news conference that such decisions will be“… with deliberate haste but I want to emphasize deliberate as well as haste.” However, it seems rather disingenuous that the formation of a large Transition Economic Advisory Board and rumors from the campaign that weeks before Election Day Obama was already planning his cabinet and redecorating the White House, that the choice of Secretary of the Treasury was not paramount and had not already been vetted with deliberation. It’s time to stop the economic hemorrhaging and make a decision, sooner not later.
But As For Me…
Oprah Winfrey is in her third day of being “unleashed” to worship at the Obama alter including providing spiritual rap music by Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am’s “It’s A New Day” for the occasion. Although this election is historic for many reasons, it should not herald unfettered adulation or reverence. Barack Obama is not the Messiah, and any opposition to his policies and politics should not be considered sacrilegious, in fact the opposite may be true.
