Foul Ball: Obama says he’s for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays & the Philadelphia Phillies in Same Week

Fresh after defeating the Red Sox, to take on the world, a handful of Devil Rays showed up at a rally in Tampa, FL to introduce and endorse the senator from Illinois. Obama, in his turn “showed some love” with hugs and handshakes.

Obama, about to show some love.

Obama took the podium and said:

“I’ve said from the beginning that I am a
unity candidate. Bringing people together
so when you see a White Sox fan showing
love to the Rays, and the Rays showing
some love back, you know we’re on to
something right here.” He added, “I was
going to cut my hair in a mohawk in
solidarity but my political adviser
said they weren’t sure how that was
going to play with ah, swing voters.”

First, It’s not a mohawk. It’s a ‘Ray-hawk’.

Second, and more significant:

Last week in Philadelphia, Obama announced he is officially rooting for the Phillies. Watch:

In the Tampa Bay area, he said:

Obama spokesman Bill Burton stressed that his boss did not at all say he was rooting for the Rays.

Yes that is Obama.

Wow! Even I Throw Better!

“He said nice things about the members of the
team who came to support him today, but that
doesn’t change his feelings about the fact that
they bounced his White Sox out of the playoffs,”
Burton said, adding that Obama would root for
the Phillies and it’s made very clear he is not
rooting for the rays if you pay attention to the
finer details of Obama’s language.

I’m assuming by finer details he means something other than
body language or the spoken word. Obama’s plain-spoken-words
clearly shows support for the Devil Rays. So does the the exchange
of hugs and handshakes.

I did notice Obama giggling as he came on stage to greet the
Rays players. Maybe the giggling signified a subliminal type
message, loosely translated to mean:

“I-do-not-mean-what-I-say-with-my-words-hugs-or-handshakes”

Unlikely.

I must conclude he lives true to every aspect of his campaign message: Change.

After all, he changed on his church, after 20 years of loyal membership. He changed on his public finance campaign promise and pledge, even while touting his big accomplishment as author of the Illinois campaign reform act. And now a 1997 book surfaces that shows Obama did in fact write for the terrorist Ayers.

Therefore, why should we expect anything less than: I was for the Philadelphia Phillies, before I was against them. And now I’m for them again.

I guess the only endorsements the Obama camp holds true are the Chris Matthews types.

Obama Takes the Stage in Tampa, FL

But despite Obama’s so-called message of
non-support, the Tampa Bay crowd went
wild with thundering roars and endless applause.

During his speech, however, Obama did receive
some ‘boos’, from apparent Palin supporters
likely in attendance to see the Devil Rays.

Obama said,

“We need to fight hard for each and
every vote during the next fifteen
days because of the terrible negativity
the McCain campaign is dishing out.
It’s getting so bad that even Sen.
McCain’s running mate denounced his
tactics last night. You know you really
have to work hard to violate [Governor
Palin’s standards."

He continued to talk, but sporadic boos echoed throughout Legends Field, for about a minute.

He spent most of his time talking about how we should all go and vote early because too many things can prevent us from voting if we wait until actual voting day in Florida.

I was for the Philadelphia Phillies, before I was against them. Now I’m for them again.

One indisputable thing is Obama stands for change: I was for the Philadelphia Phillies, before I was against them. Now I’m for them again.

Obama promised at least a $1,000 tax cut to American families. (Does anyone remember George McGovern’s similar promise to give $1,000). Obama added, “I want tax cuts, and John McCain says that’s socialist.”

Side note on McCain’s argument: Obama’s plan will give 95% of American families tax cuts. This is fact. However, 20% to 35% of families do not pay any income tax. So how are these families going to pay less taxes? They will get a tax rebate check, of at least $1,000, despite paying nothing in taxes. McCain argues that when you take away from someone and give to another person with no exchange of product or services, it smells like socialism. Isn’t getting something for nothing a principle of socialism?

Obama said it will be easy to fund this tax program, and other initiatives because “if we spend 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq, we can spend 10 billion dollars a day [sic] in this country.”

Let’s hope he misspoke.

However, he received the largest applause for his plan to pay student volunteers. He continued talking about other educational programs and ended by saying, “We have to sacrifice to make this happen, I will provide the money, but you got to do your part by reading to your children and turning off the television.”

I thought for a split-second Obama would personally provide the money by donating part of the record $150 million he raised last month to support these programs.

But then I realized he wants to increase taxes and then distribute that money the way he sees fit. It’s a good plan until you consider the fact everyday prices will increase in response to larger costs (taxes) for the people that produce most of our goods and services. Not only is this basic economics, but simple common sense.

So great, we get lower taxes, but it will cost more to simply exist in an Obama America, let alone attend a baseball game.
